Vin Diesel is currently filming Fast X, the newest episode in the massively successful Fast & Furious franchise. Despite the rigorous filming schedule, Diesel has been active on Instagram, providing film updates and videos to his 80 million fans. His most recent tweet, however, surprised many by revealing a new cast member in the film: the great Rita Moreno, who will play his grandma in the film. Moreno appeared in the video announcement alongside fellow Fast X cast member Michelle Rodriguez, who is reprising her role as Letty and, as you can see, is quite enthusiastic about Moreno’s inclusion to the group. “Working with Rita Moreno has always been a dream of mine,” Diesel says in the Instagram video. “It makes my soul happy that she’s here, playing my grandma,” he remarked. Moreno also addressed her presence in the film to fans in the video.
“I’m overjoyed, I’m overjoyed, it’s going to be so much fun!” The 90-year-old actress was recently praised for her performance as Valentina in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story adaptation, which was released last year. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1962 for her performance as Anita in the original West Side Story.
She is one of just a few celebrities with an EGOT, having won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award. Vin Diesel has already shared multiple videos from the set, including several of the returning and new cast members.
Moreno’s inclusion in Fast X appears to have been planned for at least a year. Vin Diesel told Variety in June, before of the launch of F9: The Fast and the Furious, that his desire was to have Moreno portray his grandma in a future film. Moreno told Variety at the time that she was merely waiting for Diesel’s call and hoped to be able to wear black leather.
Fast X is presently in its sixth week of production, so given that Moreno has only recently joined the cast, it is safe to infer that her involvement in the film will be minor. She’ll have to compete for screen time nevertheless, as the cast for the tenth picture is massive, with multiple stars in the cast.
Along with Diesel and Rodriguez, Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Ludacris, and Michael Rooker will reprise their Fast & Furious roles. Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), and Alan Ritchson (Amazon Prime Video’s Reacher) are among the new cast members. Moreno’s presence will hopefully be reassuring, as the picture has been in turmoil in recent weeks.
Justin Lin, who has directed five Fast and Furious films, including F9, departed the project in mid-production in April amid alleged disagreements with Vin Diesel over the film’s direction. “This project is not worth my mental health,” he allegedly told the crew as he exited the set.
