Scarlett Johansson didn’t shy away from her true feelings about possibly working alongside Tom Cruise.
There’s no doubt that Scarlett Johansson is an incredible actress. Ever since she made her film debut in the fantasy comedy North in the mid-90s, she’s proven that she’s got the range to play anything from a skilled superhero to a woman with psychokinetic abilities beyond compare. It’s no wonder that her movies have grossed more than $14 billion worldwide, making Johansson the highest-grossing box office star of all time!
Although the Black Widow star has appeared in numerous movies and worked with many great actors throughout her career, including the all-star cast of Wes Anderson’s new movie Asteroid City, Scarlett Johansson has revealed there’s one actor she’s always wanted to work with.
Scarlett Johansson Feels Like She Was Typecast By Hollywood Early OnScarlett Johansson began acting at a very young age. She enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and began auditioning for commercials but then lost interest and, instead, shifted her focus to film and theater. She made her first stage appearance in the off-Broadway play Sophistry, along with Ethan Hawke, when she was still a child.
Then, in 1994, she made her film debut with the fantasy comedy North. But she wouldn’t gain much recognition until a couple of years later when she landed roles in movies such as Manny & Lo (1996), The Horse Whisperer (1998), and Ghost World (2001). Then, in 2003, she tried to take on some more “adult” roles by starring in movies such as Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Although these two roles were significant for her career, Johansson has now admitted that this led to her being groomed to become a stereotypical bombshell. “I did Lost in Translation and Girl With the Pearl Earring, and by that point, I was 18, 19, and I was coming into my own womanhood and learning my own desirability and sexuality,” the actress revealed. “I was kind of being groomed in a way to be this, what you call this ‘bombshell’ type of actor.”
While being considered a “bombshell” in Hollywood helped her land popular roles like Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Johansson has admitted that this also limited her work options. “I kind of became objectified and pigeonholed in this way where I felt like I wasn’t getting offers for work for things that I wanted to do. I remember thinking to myself, ‘I think people think I’m 40 years old.’ It somehow stopped being something that was desirable and something that I was fighting against,” the actress revealed.
Ultimately, Johansson was able to change the course of her career. Over the past years, the actress has played many different characters in which she’s able to showcase her acting abilities over her physical appearance. This includes her roles in Noah Baumbach’s film Marriage Story and Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, which helped her win her first two Academy Award nominations, for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.
Scarlett Johansson Worked With Many Great Actors For Wes Anderson’s Latest Movie, Asteroid CityScarlett Johansson took a small break from acting after appearing in Black Widow (2021) and subsequently filing a lawsuit against Disney for a breach of contract after they released the movie on their streaming service Disney+ while it was still in theaters.
However, this year, Johansson returned to the big screen by starring in Wes Anderson’s latest flick, Asteroid City (2023). In addition to Johansson, the ensemble cast of this upcoming sci-fi film features a ton of stars, including Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, and Jeff Goldblum.
This is Johansson’s second movie to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The surprising thing is that the actress didn’t get paid much for her role. In fact, Johansson only earned a little over $4,000 per week for the two months she worked on this project. The reason she accepted such a substantial pay cut was for the opportunity to work with so many great actors, as well as with director and writer Wes Anderson. “I like the sort of constraints of Wes’ precision. I think in some ways, it’s more liberating,” the Black Widow star told Vanity Fair.
Scarlett Johansson Revealed She Really Wants To Work With Tom CruiseDuring the New York premiere of Asteroid City, Scarlett Johansson revealed that, despite working with so many big stars on this Wes Anderson film, there’s one actor she’s always wanted to work with but hasn’t been able to. “I’d love to work with Tom Cruise,” the actress revealed.
While there’s no doubt that the Top Gun star is an incredibly talented actor, there are many rumors about Tom Cruise being a nightmare to work with. For instance, Mission Impossible II co-star, Thandie Newton, revealed that working alongside Cruise was a complete nightmare.
“I was so scared of Tom,” she revealed. “He was a very dominant individual. He tries super hard to be a nice person. But the pressure. He takes on a lot. And I think he has this sense that only he can do everything as best as it can be done.”
But who knows, we might see Johansson and Cruise star in a movie together in the future. If that were to happen, there’s no doubt that these two talented actors would do an amazing job together.
