Even though Sylvester Stallone’s Barney is the heart of The Expendables franchise, there’s a strong possibility he’s going to die in Expendables 4.
The Expendables started with Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross forming the team, but there have been recent hints that he could die in The Expendables 4. The latest installment in the action franchise is directed by Scott Waugh and finds Barney seeking out Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), and the rest of the gang for their biggest mission yet; stopping a ship full of nuclear explosives from igniting a war between the United States and Russia. Several new characters, including Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s team member Easy Day and Megan Fox’s CIA agent Gina, will round out the cast.
Based on the trailer and everything known about The Expendables 4, it’s a possibility that Stallone is looking to exit the franchise. Not only does he have other projects that he’s working on simultaneously, but his passion for getting all of these revered action legends together may not be as strong as it was thirteen years ago. Details from the trailer and comments made by Sly himself suggest that his future with the franchise is limited, and Barney Ross could make a valiant sacrifice to pass the torch of The Expendables franchise to a worthy successor.
8Sylvester Stallone Has A Smaller Role In Expendables 4 Than Before
Sylvester Stallone has been one of a handful of actors who have appeared in every Expendables movie, with most installments including a rotating cast of famous action heroes including Jet Li, Harrison Ford, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Based on the trailers for The Expend4bles, Barney doesn’t appear to be in it as much as in previous films, except in the beginning to recruit Lee and then sparsely throughout the action sequences that take place on the ship and base. Barney seems to be mostly used as a framing device, with Statham leading most of the action sequences.
7Jason Statham Is The Expendables Franchise’s Lead Now
Like Stallone, Jason Statham has appeared in every movie in The Expendables franchise and has slowly taken his place as the lead. Barney and Lee are good friends and lean on each other’s judgment and leadership, so it’s not very surprising that Barney would entrust the group with Lee (even if not all the other members would agree with him). Statham certainly has the action pedigree between The Transporter, The Meg, and the Hobbs and Shaw movies to lead a franchise.
6Expendables 4 Is Sylvester Stallone’s Final Movie In The Franchise
Back in 2021, Stallone quit and rejoined the franchise, announcing on his Instagram that he was looking to step away from the Lionsgate series because it was “in capable hands” without him as far as the cast was concerned. As far as the creative side of things was concerned at the time, he wasn’t a fan of the direction the movie was taking with the then-current cohort of writers and directors, with changes often being made at the last minute that didn’t meet with Sly’s approval. It’s possible that he could change his mind as the driving force of the franchise since the beginning, but he may believe it’s finally time to move on.
5Sylvester Stallone Filmed An Emotional Expendables 4 Farewell Video
On his last day of filming The Expendables 4, Sylvester Stallone took to his Instagram to convey just how much the shoot had meant to him. “It’s always bittersweet,” said the star, “you know, when something you’ve been so attached to, I guess, since… Well, now it’s been about 12 years? And ready to pass the baton on to Jason [Statham] [and] his capable hands.” Sly went on to explain that he hoped audiences appreciated the human element he always tried to bring to his stories, and it’s the sort of poignant farewell message that indicates his final day of filming was emotional because Barney has permanently left the franchise.
4Stallone Already Hinted At Barney’s Fate In The Expendables 3
Barney Ross always had a way of waxing poetic even during the most intense situations, and in The Expendables 3, the warrior poet got very serious about his future. At one point he addressed the team and said, “As I see it, if we keep this life up, the only way this thing ends, for all of us, is in a hole in the ground, and no one giving a s***. Now if that’s the way I’m supposed to go out, I can live with that. For me.” This speech indicates that he’s accepted, and maybe even desires, to die in the line of duty, because he’s taken accountability for the dangerous life he’s chosen, and wants to die with honor and dignity.
3Stallone Is Busy Filming The Second Season Of Tulsa King
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Trench Mauser is a franchise character missing from The Expendables 4, and he wasn’t concerned – the Austrian Oak was busy shooting FUBAR, his hit show on Netflix. Not to be outdone, Sylvester Stallone starred in his own series for Paramount+ called Tulsa King, about a mobster who relocates to Tulsa, Oklahoma and starts a new operation with hilarious results. His series has already started production on season 2, and Stallone has been very vocal about how grueling his first stint on television has been, so if Barney dies in The Expendables 4 Stallone is free to concentrate all of his energy on Tulsa King season 2.
2The Family Stallone Can’t Work Without Sylvester Stallone
As of 2023, Sylvester Stallone has starred alongside his wife and daughters in The Family Stallone, a reality television series that looks at the inner workings of his life caught on candid camera. So far, the docuseries has had one season on Paramount+ that has been consistently popular, and a second season has already been picked up, which means he’ll probably start shooting in and around the second season of Tulsa King to mirror the format of the first one. Stallone already explained that shooting a television series is infinitely harder than shooting a film, so two television series will definitely require the Italian Stallone to go the distance.
1It Took 10 Years To Make The Expendables 4 & Stallone Won’t Wait
Stallone leaving Expendables means he has no franchises left, but considering that The Expend4bles took ten years to make, it’s probably for the best. Stallone is 76 years old, and while in tremendous physical condition, may not be able to do the same action-oriented roles when he’s 86. Killing Barney’s character in The Expendables 4 would take the pressure off Stallone to have to come back for another Expendables movie when the toll of performing his own fight sequences would be too dramatic.
