Keanu Reeves confirms he’s spoken with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn about Constantine 2. A new DC Universe is on the rise. Under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership, a new interconnected universe will take shape and create a more cohesive franchise. However, prior to the big announcement in January, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed that an old DC franchise is getting revived. Back in September 2022, Constantine 2 was officially put into development, with Reeves reprising the role of the DC Hellblazer. Constantine director Francis Lawrence will direct the sequel, but little news has emerged since the initial announcement.
While the initial DC movies and TV shows have been revealed for Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” DC Studios is also looking at Elsewords properties too. But Constantine 2 was not one of the projects mentioned during the January announcement, leaving many to wonder what’s going on. Reeves recently participated in an AMA session on Reddit where one fan asked if he had spoken with Gunn about Constantine 2 while also hoping it will still happen. The actor confirmed that he has indeed had discussions with Gunn about Constantine 2 while also remaining hopeful it will happen.
TheDorkKnightreturns: Have you spoken with James Gunn at all in regards to Constantine 2? Hope we get to see it!
lionsgate [Keanu Reeves]: Yes, and me too.

Could Keanu Reeves’ Constantine Join The New DC Universe
Even though Constantine 2 was never brought up during the January event, it definitely seems as if the sequel is still happening to some degree. If Gunn had a chat with Reeves about it, that could mean a number of things. For starters, if they are considering Reeves’ Constantine universe as an Elseworlds property, then that allows his franchise not to have to worry about what the DC Universe is doing. On the other hand, if Gunn has plans to use Constantine in the DC Universe, those conversations may have been about how to make sure each incarnation can co-exist without conflicts.
With Reeves’ massive popularity and Constantine 2 getting a sequel almost 20 years later, this would be an opportunity to connect it to a shared universe. Since the first Constantine movie was a looser adaptation, they could find creative ways to integrate it into Gunn’s new continuity. It would also allow the DC Universe to have a veteran hero, as Reeves’ Constantine would likely be older than some of the main heroes, including Superman and Batman.
With HBO Max’s Justice League Dark TV show not moving forward, Constantine 2 could serve as a gateway to bring in more supernatural players into the DC Universe. Seeing Reeves’ incarnation of the Hellblazer come into contact with characters like Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and Deadman would genuinely be intriguing to see. Hopefully, as 2023 progresses, more details on Constantine 2 will begin to emerge, especially as DC Studios is getting things rolling.
