As she says, she likes baths, Rihanna and perfume. And her Eilish No. has just premiered. 2. – My original idea was that my second fragrance, whatever it was, would smell like wet concrete, like pavement after rain. It’s a very specific smell, it reminds me of my childhood – says Billie Eilish, who also shares a playlist of her choice.
Billie Eilish believes that people are complicated – and that includes herself. “For most of my life, I’ve been very masculine, boyish, and quite recently, in the last couple of years, I started thinking, ‘You know what, I can be who I want, when I want,’” she says . “I don’t have to keep proving to everyone that I’m a tomboy. I mean, I’m a tomboy, but I’m also that kind of girl. I’m also feminine, I’m sexy, I’m cute, sometimes I’m none of the above, and I’m just me anyway.
Another example: professionally, Eilish is a Grammy-winning pop star and perfumer. “I remember when someone mentioned that I could create my own fragrance, I thought, ‘Wait, can I really do that?! What are you talking about?” – recalls Eilish, who in 2021 launched the first perfume signed with her name. “I’m a huge fan of everything related to fragrances and I’m very happy to be part of this world now,” she adds . Following the recent release of Eilish No. 2, a perfume with a moist, woody note, enclosed in a dark gray version of the original bottle in the form of an elegantly segmented body (As Billie says: “I’m obsessed with the body. I’ve had it forever), Eilish makes her presence even stronger in this sphere.
“The original idea was that my second fragrance, whatever it was, would smell like wet concrete, like pavement after it rains. It’s a very specific smell, it reminds me of my childhood – says Eilish. “It sort of led me towards this rainy world, this forest world,” he adds . This imaginary landscape, like the bottle, is gray – a reality created in part by the pop star’s innate synesthesia. “Eilish 2 always seemed like a gray world to me. There is no world where orange could be, for example, he explains. The same applies to the first perfumes.“From the very beginning, I only considered amber. It was supposed to be a warm amber brown color. It appeared in my head when I smelled them – she says .
The colors, as well as the shape of the bottle, are as important to Eilish as the fragrance itself. “When I smell a sample of a perfume that isn’t mine, and every little tester looks the same – all those little bottles with black or white caps – when I like them, I order the big version.” And if the bottle has a shape or color that doesn’t look like what the fragrance is to me, that’s a problem for me,” she says. “Then I can’t use them because I don’t like it.
Even if such thinking seems disproportionate to the problem, it is not. Eilish, 21, is a creative phenomenon and has been diligently creating her world in front of everyone since she was 13. He expresses his worldview, taste and talent, which translates into growing up, trying new things, whether he likes them or abandons them. Plus, he tries his best to rely on his own moral compass despite the constant deluge of outside opinions.
For this year’s MET Gala, Eilish donned a goth sheer gown by Simone Rocha, braided her hair in a bow-trimmed braid and applied seductive make-up – very, very sophisticated. And after the MET Gala? “I went back to the hotel and said, ‘Get that off meeeeee!’ he recalls. “I put on baggy North Face pants, a large zip-up jacket, a backward baseball cap, and Jordans—that’s how I feel best. I feel strong in these clothes . And again… people are full of contradictions. “I’m trying to get more comfortable with makeup, I mean heavy makeup, ” Eilish says, noting that she’s trying to embrace the power of hyperfemininity.– Of course, I always wear light makeup, but I admire heavily painted faces, I admire them, but I am very afraid of them.
Fear isn’t something most fans associate with Eilish, who looks more like she doesn’t care. This is partly due to her preferred aesthetics and partly due to the time she spends in the spotlight. However, after years of body shaming and constant criticism (expressed especially on social media), she really is far from giving a shit.
– I do not even know. It’s hard , says Eilish. “Honestly, no one can say anything about my body that I don’t have a stronger opinion of. I also think if the internet had spoken of me the way it does now when I was younger, 11 years old, I don’t think I would have been able to exist . “I like myself more than I used to, and I’m more interested in how I feel than they do.” But that could also be total bullshit because it still fucking hurts my feelings.
And yet there are some solutions. “I like baths, ” she says. “Also, I play a lot on my phone, which makes me feel really good,” he adds . Eilish also likes Rihanna ( “I think one day I thought she was the sexiest person in the history of this world,” says Eilish ), family time, and animals. “Dogs, big dogs… I feel relaxed around them, ” she says. To be honest, I’m going through a hard time and I’m still trying to figure it out. It’s definitely a strange life, I must admit.
In short: whether her vibe , music or scents appeal to you, in the worlds Billie creates, care, authenticity and self-awareness are paramount. And what is innovation if not continuous evolution?
