Ana de Armas has starred in several major action films in recent years, indicating that she would be a great choice for Amazon’s Tomb Raider reboot.
Ana de Armas has starred in at least nine films that prove she would be great as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot. There has not been a Tomb Raider movie released since an attempted sequel-reboot amalgamation in 2018 that placed Ex Machina alum Alicia Vikander in the leading role. The film was a convoluted adaptation of the Tomb Raider video game released in 2013 as well as a reboot of the original 2001 and 2003 Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina Jolie. After the lackluster response to the 2018 installment, hopes for a Vikander-led Tomb Raider franchise were axed by MGM who lost the creative rights after failing to greenlight a sequel by May 2022.
Amazon is reportedly developing a new Tomb Raider movie as well as an exclusive series for Prime Video. Ana de Armas, who rose to fame with her appearance in the modern sci-fi epic Blade Runner 2049, has recently appeared in a string of big-budget action movies. She recently told Vanity Fair that she has become fatigued by the action genre and would like to pursue more dramatic roles such as her leading role in Blonde as Marilyn Monroe. Here are nine Ana de Armas movie roles that prove why she shouldn’t give up on the action genre just yet and would make a great Lara Croft in Amazon’s Tomb Raider.
9The Gray Man (2022)
The Gray Man might not have won over massive audiences as Netflix and the Russo Brothers had intended it to, but it did showcase Ana de Armas as a formidable action hero. De Armas plays CIA agent Dani Miranda alongside Ryan Gosling’s Six and Chris Evan’s antagonist mercenary Lloyd Hansen. De Armas shows off her hand-to-hand combat skills in The Gray Man which left her bruised and bloodied, showing that that actor is not afraid to get her hands dirty in a physically demanding role.
8Ghosted (2023)
De Armas continued her string of action roles in Apple’s streaming movie Ghosted earlier this year, pairing up once again with Evans as a CIA secret agent named Sadie. What begins as a simple rom-com unfolds into an unexpected action-packed rollercoaster with De Armas fully equipped with a variety of weapons and tactical fighting skills. Despite the myriad flaws in Ghosted as a movie, De Armas delivers a convincing performance as a fearless, gun-wielding action star whose performance completely takes over the film.
7Overdrive (2017)
De Armas takes much more of a passenger seat in the full-throttle movie Overdrive alongside Scott Eastwood and Freddie Thorp. De Armas plays Stephanie, who gets kidnapped and held hostage in the film, largely acting as the primary motivation for the heroic efforts of Eastwood’s character. The natural charm and appeal of De Armas are very evident in Overdrive, which contributes to the notion that she would fit the leading role expectations of the typically attractive Lara Croft character.
6No Time to Die (2021)
De Armas’s brief yet impactful appearance in No Time to Die essentially launched her recent stint in action movies after the Bond film’s success. De Armas once again played a CIA agent in the movie with impressive combat and weaponry skills mixed with a gravitating charisma and overall allure. Her career-shaping role as Paloma in No Time To Die left audiences wanting to see more of de Armas in action roles, indicating that there is certainly a demand for her to star in a massive action-packed franchise like Tomb Raider.
5Ballerina (2024)
The upcoming John Wick spin-off Ballerina is set to feature de Armas in her most challenging action role yet. De Armas will star as Rooney, a young female assassin who seeks revenge on the people who killed her family. Given the remarkable success of the John Wick franchise, an outstanding performance in Ballerina might create another action series or trilogy with de Armas in the spotlight. This could force de Armas to embrace the action genre that is basically calling out her name despite her desire to pursue more dramatic roles moving forward.
4Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Blade Runner 2049 catapulted de Armas’s career and essentially made her an A-list actor and celebrity soon after its release. Her performance as Joi, the holographic girlfriend of Ryan Gosling’s K protagonist, demonstrated her ability to mesmerize an audience while mastering an unusual character. De Armas clearly was able to grasp the more cerebral themes associated with Blade Runner 2049 in her performance, which could add a layer of sophistication to her potential Lara Croft character in Tomb Raider.
3Knives Out (2019)
While Blade Runner 2049 put de Armas on the map as a scene-stealing talent, her true acting chops were put to the test in Rian Johnson’s celebrated ensemble piece Knives Out. De Armas quickly demonstrated that she was a legitimate leading role contender with her character Marta Cabrera, the innocent and likable nurse of Harlan Thombey in the film. De Armas impressively matches the performances of an extraordinarily talented cast, including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Christopher Plummer. With Knives Out, De Armas proved she could rub onscreen shoulders with the very best.
2Blonde (2022)
Blonde placed de Armas with the extraordinary task of portraying the controversial and iconic figure Marilyn Monroe. The film demonstrates de Armas’s fearlessness as an actor and her ability to convincingly play a historically-based character, knowing that there would be millions of eyes looking for flaws in her portrayal. Blonde proved that de Armas was truly leading role material in her ability to give a commanding and Oscar-nominated performance without much help from her co-stars, director, or screenplay.
1Joint Security Area
While the upcoming remake of the 2000 Korean film Joint Security Area has yet to be released, de Armas is confirmed to be the lead actor in the action-heavy movie. The original was at one point the highest-grossing film in Korean history, a clear testament to Hollywood’s faith in de Armas in another significant action role. Joint Security Area will mark her fifth major action blockbuster since 2021’s No Time To Die, indicating that the path to de Armas’s leading part as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider is well within her range and reach.
